Earlier this year I was introduced to the up and coming craze of geocaching and since then I’m pretty sure I’ve become an addict. Let me first explain to you a little about what geocaching is and how to get started!
I’ve got some forums now for geocaching, register and chat about geocaching with me and others
What is Geocaching?
Well thankfully on the main geocaching website (http://www.geocaching.com) they have a helpful paragraph that explains it nicely.
“Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache.”
Simple enough isn’t it? You can use things like your car sat nav (if it allows you to enter co-ordinates and can be hand held) your phone if it has a browser to use Google Maps or MultiMap, a smart phone (I use an iPhone) or a dedicated hand held GPS like the one I also use, the Garmin eTrex® H.
So now onto how you get going with Geocaching!
Geocaching Getting Started
When I was first introduced to Geocaching I simply used my iPhone and the geocaching website oh and of course my legs and eyes! A bit of prep work first deciding what geocaches to find was a good idea and making sure I had all the information to hand (on paper because (a) the iPhone batter isn’t super and (b) it’s just easier to refer to things quickly!)
